YOUR CARE, EXPLAINED

Impacted Canines

Impacted canine treatment can help guide a tooth that has remained beneath the gum or bone. Surgical exposure is coordinated with your orthodontist to support the next stage of your care.

What is an impacted canine?

An impacted canine remains beneath the gum or within the jawbone instead of reaching its place in the smile. Crowding, a retained baby tooth, another obstruction, or an unusual eruption path can contribute. Evaluation also considers nearby roots and the possibility of a cyst.

Preserving an important tooth

Canines help with biting and the appearance of the smile. Your oral surgeon and orthodontist work together to assess whether exposure and orthodontic movement can bring the tooth into position. Imaging helps locate it and plan access.

Surgical exposure and orthodontic guidance

After anesthesia, the surgeon lifts the overlying gum and may remove a small amount of bone. A bracket and small chain may be attached, or the area prepared for your orthodontist to attach them. Sutures position the gum tissue.

Recovery and the next stage of treatment

Early recovery may involve swelling, soreness, and soft foods. The orthodontist determines when gentle movement begins. Moving the canine into alignment takes many months; the team coordinates appointments and instructions around your individual plan.
